A Couple Days Later

The next two days were deceptively quiet. Through interoffice mail, I’d sent Cassie a check for what I figured was twice the damage, and she’d e-mailed to say that she’d cashed it right away, before I could change my weasel mind.

We’d had no other contact, though, which was probably wise.

Still, we had to work together. In fact, we had an appointment with a client on Thursday, so we’d have to work together in public. I planned to stop by her office before the appointment to try to break the ice.

She’d saved me the trouble, though. That morning, I found a note in Cassie’s angular handwriting taped to my office door:
